jabeau
an Ableton Live Audio Effect Rack that lets you freeze and harmonize audio input in real-time
LIVE 12.1 ONLY (must have the Auto Shift device)
jaFreeze Manual
Macros
-
time
- determines how much of the audio will be frozen after passing the threshold
- if set too low or too high, it may not be able to freeze the audio
-
smooth
- how long it takes to switch between macro variations (the chords)
- basically a portamento
-
mid/high toggle
- If you have mid-range audio input, toggle mid, and if you have high-range audio input, toggle high
- If the audio sounds warbly and distorted, it means you have to toggle the mid/high parameter
-
threshold
- the level at which the audio will freeze infinitely
- if set too high, the effect won't work at all
-
reset threshold
- once you have frozen audio, the reset threshold determines how loud the following audio input needs to be to refresh the frozen audio
- if set too low, the frozen input won't refresh
-
int [1-6]
- int corresponds to the interval in semitones added on top of the audio input as well as on top of one another
-
reset toggle
- this resets the effect
- it's best to keymap this to a MIDI controller or just a key on your keyboard for easy use
-
chords (macro variations)
- int 1-6 correspond to intervals laid out after each other
- Since there are six intervals, there are seven notes total
- When you open up the macro variations, you'll see a selection of chords from triads to 7-note chords, that I've mapped out for you
- However these chords don't belong to a specific key, they instead revolve around whatever input you put in
- rp = Root Position, 1i = First Inversion, 2i = Second Inversion, 3i = Third Inversion, etc.
- EXAMPLE
- The M7 rp (Major 7 Root Position) has intervals 4st, 3st, 4st (st = semitone)
- If the audio input is a C3, the jaPeggiator will output C3 E3 G3 B3, a C Major 7 chord
- The M7 rp chord treats the audio input (C3) as the root or first note of the chord
- But the M7 1i treats the audio input (C3) as the third or second note of the chord
- So the M7 1i has intervals 3st, 4st, 1st
- With an audio input of C3, the jaPeggiator will output C3 Eb3 G3 Ab3, an Ab Major 7 chord in its first inversion
- If you sing one note and change the chords (switch macro variations) there will always be at least one note in common: the note that you're singing
- This makes for interesting voice-leading and it also allows us to think of chords and harmony differently than we're used to
